The Sacred Directions

Project type

Drawing

Date

Mid 1980's

Location

Los Angeles, CA

Context: Métis Sweet Medicine Sundance + Shrine of Our Lady of the West

The Sweet Medicine Sundance tradition is rooted in the sacred wheel of life, where all things are connected through the Eight Sacred Directions — each with physical, spiritual, emotional, and ancestral significance. The Métis people, with their blended Indigenous and European lineage, often work between worlds — a liminal role echoed in the motifs here.

The Shrine of Our Lady of the West is a syncretic spiritual tradition that honors the divine feminine presence of the West — the direction of the soul’s journey, the veil between life and death, dreaming, wisdom, and the ancestral realm. This artist, as both medicine woman and ordained priestess, blends ceremonial knowledge with visual storytelling.
